EV Charging Cost Calculator

Calculate the cost to charge an electric car at home or at a public charger, per charge, per mile and per month.

How to use it

  1. Enter the usable battery capacity (see your car's spec sheet).
  2. Set the start and target charge level.
  3. Enter your home rate from your bill, or the public charger's price per kWh.
  4. Charging losses are typically 10-15% at home (Level 2).

How it works

Energy from the grid = battery × (to − from) ÷ efficiency. Cost = energy × rate. Cost per mile = rate ÷ (miles per kWh × efficiency). The US residential average is roughly 17-18¢ per kWh, while DC fast charging often costs 40-60¢ per kWh.

FAQ

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

A 75 kWh battery from 20% to 80% takes about 50 kWh from the wall including losses - around $8.50 at 17¢/kWh.

Is fast charging more expensive?

Usually 2-3× the cost of home charging per kWh, plus some losses; it is best kept for road trips.
