Gas Cost Calculator

Calculate the gas cost of a trip from distance, fuel economy and gas price - one way or round trip, split between passengers, in US or metric units.

How to use it

  1. Choose US (miles, MPG, $/gal) or metric (km, L/100 km, price per liter).
  2. Enter the one-way distance from your map app.
  3. Enter your car's real-world fuel economy; highway is usually better than the window sticker's combined figure.
  4. Add tolls and parking and how many people share the cost.

How it works

Fuel used = distance ÷ MPG (US) or distance × L/100 km ÷ 100 (metric). Cost = fuel × price. Real-world use rises with speed above ~55-60 mph, roof boxes, heavy loads, cold weather and A/C.

FAQ

How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?

Divide the miles by your MPG to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. 300 miles at 30 MPG and $3.25/gal = 10 gal = $32.50.

How do you split gas money fairly?

Divide total fuel plus tolls and parking by the number of riders; some groups also add a per-mile wear amount for the driver.
