EV vs Gas Cost Calculator

Compare yearly fueling cost of an electric car vs a gas car from your mileage, gas price and electricity rate, plus maintenance.

How to use it

  1. Enter your annual mileage and the gas car's MPG.
  2. Enter the EV efficiency and your home electricity price.
  3. Set how much charging happens at home vs public fast chargers.
  4. Add the purchase price difference to see the break-even years.

How it works

Gas cost = miles ÷ MPG × price. EV cost = miles ÷ (mi/kWh × 0.9 efficiency) × blended rate. Maintenance on EVs is often lower (no oil changes), but insurance and tires can cost more - include what applies to you.

FAQ

How much do you save with an electric car?

At 12,000 miles, 30 MPG and $3.25 gas vs 3.5 mi/kWh at mostly-home charging, fuel savings are roughly $450-$650 a year depending on how much you charge at home; more with high gas prices, high mileage or cheap overnight rates.
